A lift chair or a recliner might be manual or powered today and there are several Australian companies that either make or distribute this kind of furniture. Such a chair is either crafted to help increase comfort, functionality, or to meet the needs of old and disabled people who would have trouble getting out of a chair by themselves. The History Of Reclining Going as far back as the Romans, it wasn’t uncommon to see people reclining after their meal, with the aid of pillows. In the 19th Century the French army actually used an army cot that could be adjusted into a chair or a lounger. This was very useful as army camp furniture because it did not take up much space. Also, it was much easier to only have to transport one piece of furniture instead of three. Of course, this original invention was probably similar to backyard lounge chairs that are common today. They also fold up and can be set to sit upright, recline, or even lie down. The Birth Of The Modern Recliner Of course, today's quality recliners are so much better than simple camp beds or lounge chairs. The father of the modern recliner Daniel F. Caldemeyer called his first model the "rocket" recliner. He based this brand name upon his experience with the science of kinetics and the fact that he had served in the US Air Force before moving on to design and invent new furniture. Also, NASA used his designs for early manned rocket flights. Daniel Caldemeyer went on to earn over 300 different patents for his designs. In fact, he is credited with adding massaging mechanisms, movable foot rests, and heated seats. Contemporary Recliners And Flexible Chairs In the beginning, modern recliners were usually pretty bulky and heavy. They would be placed in one spot and seldom moved. The earliest recliners were designed to be light but maybe not that comfortable. Today's enhancements in design and technology allow many manufactures to design very comfortable multi-function chairs that are also easy to move. In fact, some of them may even have castors. Recliners can provide a degree of comfort and flexibility that can't be provided by a regular piece of furniture that is designed for only one function. Some are even powered by a motor, and they might be able to move in a number of directions. Others are still manual. However, there is little doubt that almost every home has at least one recliner today.
